The Caves of Los Canarios

At the Montaña del Confital, which rises above the beach of the same name, near to the neighbourhood of Las Coloradas, are the Caves of Los Canarios. Access to and the visit of this settlement is extremely easy, offering as it does beautiful views over Las Canteras beach and the north coast of the island. 

This archaeological settlement features two large artificial dwelling caves and other smaller ones, with silos, dug out on two levels. They all lie under a sheltering natural arcade. They are currently in quite a bad state. 

Practically all the caves are facing west, allowing for ample sunshine hours. A few of the caves have small holes on both the floor and walls, which have been attributed to domestic uses: they serve as supports for internal dividers to make optimum use of space, to hang tools and recipients, as well as other uses. There are also small hollows dug out of the rock, used as cupboards, etc. As has already been pointed out in other settlements, the caves are joined up by pathways and corridors. All these aspects have been taken into account when reconstructing the organisation of domestic space, as well as all other activities carried out there.
