The Ice Palace
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Memory · Subcategory: Memory spaces · Year: 1975-1982
The old Ice Palace was built in 1975 thanks to the initiative of the businessman José Ramírez Puello. It was an emblematic space for the society of the time, which linked it to modernity and the newly inaugurated democracy in Spain. Difficulties in its maintenance led to its use being transformed into a large bowling alley, called Palace Bowling.
In 1982 a great fire broke out that destroyed the building and sparked controversy over whether the fire was intentional. For years the ruined building served as shelter for people who built shacks inside. Currently, the site is occupied by a building dedicated to sports activities.
