Hermitage of the Vera Cruz

The old hermitage of the Vera Cruz, one of the first built within the urban perimeter of Vegueta, was founded in 1524 on a site occupied by the old houses of the mancebía (brothel). Built on the edge of the sea, this hermitage housed a revered image of Christ that had great devotion in the city. The small temple was razed by the Dutch in their attack at the end of the 16th century and quickly rebuilt in 1609. More than fifty years later, it was definitively demolished to make way for the first church of San Agustín.
