The Plaza de San Lorenzo is built around the beautiful temple there, a fine example and gem of Canary architectural heritage [...] The parish of San Lorenzo used to be known as Lugarejo, and was created by decree on 22nd February 1681, becoming independent from the Tabernacle of the Cathedral of the Canaries of which it formed part. [...] As the town grew, the temple also had to be expanded, and to which end two side naves were added to the original single one, which were finalised following a huge effort and support by all the parishioners. The original building was erected to the orders of the locales in 1638, while at the same time, when they chose their patron saint, they changed the then rather inappropriate name of the time, to the more appropriate San Lorenzo.
