Monument to Pablo Iglesias

Coinciding with the closing of the 1st Ordinary Congress of the UGT of the Canary Islands, held in October 1994, the monument dedicated to the memory of Pablo Iglesias was inaugurated, located at the doors of the socialist union headquarters on 1º de Mayo street.

The bronze portrait of Iglesias, captured up to almost the waist, is by the sculptor Borges Linares and is based on various photographs, accurately imitated in the facial features of the socialist leader. The artist took just over two months to achieve the desired modelling, then the mould was sent to a foundry workshop where it remained for a month. He is depicted elegantly dressed, with jacket and tie, with the facial expression being the most notable. He sketches a smile that denotes his simplicity.

The white pedestal, on which a plaque reads "The city to Pablo Iglesias", was originally designed for the bust of Viera y Clavijo; when this was moved to the plaza of the Real Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País, it remained empty since then and has now been reused for this tribute.
