Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Memory · Subcategory: People · Year: 2022
Isabel Torres was an LGTBI rights activist, as well as an actress and communicator, born and deceased in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 2022 at the age of 52. The mural is located on one of the walls of the former Estadio Insular and can be seen from the Paseo de Chil.
This initiative of the Canarias Orgullosa programme (Proud Canary Islands) of the Gobierno de Canarias (Government of the Canary Islands) is a posthumous tribute to one of the key figures in the fight to raise awareness of the issues faced by transgender people, being herself the first transgender person in the Canary Islands to have her DNI adapted to her gender identity. Isabel Torres was also the first transgender candidate for Queen of the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 2005.
