Ángel Guimerá (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 1845 - Barcelona, 1924) was a poet and dramatist who started his literary career in poetry, although it was his talent as a drama writer that launched him to international fame. He obtained the title of Mestre en Gai Saber when he won his third Juegos Florales. At the end of the 19th century he wrote his three great realistic dramas: María Rosa; Tierra baja; and La hija del mar which deal with working men, rural life and marine life respectively. Due to the success of his dramas, he become one of the main authors to have his works made into films at the start of the 20th century. Tierra baja led to silent films made in Argentina, United States and Germany.
