Behind the bridge rises the silhouette of the building of the former provincial prison, today a foreigner detention centre, built on a plot of more than 10,000 square metres, and according to the project by architect José Luis Aranguren, between 1930 and 1933 at the initiative of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, to replace the old and inadequate cells on López Botas Street, as had been requested since the beginning of the century, and which had the unconditional support of the then Director General of Prisons, the notable Lanzarote writer and journalist José Betancort Cabrera, author of works such as La lapa , Rincón isleño and A merced del viento .
