The Church of San Francisco de Borja

This church was built around the second third of the 18th century. On this site of the Colegio de la Compañía de Jesús in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which was inaugurated in 1754, several individuals were involved, including Juan Visentelo and Francisco Lapierre. The church has maintained its typical Jesuit structure with its Latin cross formation with a dome over pendentives in the transept, at the time representing a new style for the city, as it is prior to the erection of the dome base at the Cathedral. Another of its interesting features is its façade, made wholly out of quarry stone and with a doorway featuring the freedom of classical elements, and the appearance of Salomonic columns. Despite its Baroque style, it does have references that link it with the Puerta del Aire at the Cathedral. This church has considerable significance, as it was the first in a line of Canary temples with dome structures on them.
