The Archangel's Feather , by Carlos Álvarez, is a historical novel set in 1520 in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In the writer’s own words "It is the story of an inquisitor who manages to turn everyone against him."

"On Sunday morning the whole island is in Santa Ana square. The cathedral doors have not yet opened and the square is a crowd and a festive babel uproar; each one speaks the language they have brought, some from Andalusia, others from Castile, there are also Navarrese and Aragonese, and although all speak Spanish, each does so in their own way and with their own tones; and there are also the Portuguese and the Flemish and the Genoese, many of whom still preserve their languages among themselves; some greet others and even embrace if they have not seen each other for a long time. Each one speaks with their own in the language of their land and all wear their festive clothes, also all different; that is why Nemesio knows where each one comes from almost without needing to hear them speak."
