Luces en el Vacío (Lights in a vacuum)

The sculpture Luces en el vacío won the competition to design the monument built to keep alive the memory of the 154 victims of flight JK 5022 which crashed in Madrid airport. It is a corten steel tube, measuring 2,20 x 2,20 allowing one person to enter at a time, which aims to "remember those no longer with us, through an elevated object looking out over the sea out to the universe, extending a hand out to it, so as we can be ready to experience a fleeting moment of calm, inner peace and awe, a short moment of remembrance", in the words of Juan Velázquez.

It is an empty elevated tube with a single side access up a ramp that signifies "the welcoming gesture, to offer a hand up into a vacuum of a calm and peaceful entry" (Juan Velázquez).
