Women's Prison

Very little is known about this prison facility exclusively intended for the internment of female prisoners. It is known that the penitentiary establishment was located on San Miguel Street, in the heart of the El Toscal neighbourhood, at the lower corner with Señor de las Tribulaciones Street. It is assumed that it began operating as a women's prison in the early years of the 20th century. It is also inferred, given the little importance attached to these matters at the time, that the hygienic and sanitary conditions of this female prison left much to be desired.

Although it was a prison exclusively for women, during the outbreak of the Civil War, before the Fyffes facility came into operation, it served as an improvised internment centre, under terrible overcrowded conditions, for numerous political prisoners of both sexes who initially opposed the uprising against the Republic.

The women's prison on San Miguel Street remained active until the late 1940s, when the Provincial Prison on Benito Pérez Armas Avenue began operating.
