Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Cultural spaces · Subcategory: Institutions · Year: 1995 · Authors: Santiago Calatrava Valls
Opposite the Parque Marítimo, located at an important point for the city due to its access and proximity to the coastal landscape, the International Fair and Congress Centre, better known as Recinto Ferial, has quickly become a formal reference, almost a monument, for this entire area.
Designed in 1993 by the Valencian technician Santiago Calatrava, this immense building contains multiple spaces that guarantee the capacity to adapt to very varied uses: exhibition for fairs, musical events, amusement park, technological congresses, carnival galas, etc.
Its splendid 150 metres in length are covered with a roof hanging from a spectacular double arch, supported at its ends by robust concrete tripods. The large nave rests on a plinth whose exterior structure consists of concrete buttresses that help support the large upper construction with their multiple feet.
As if it were the skeleton of a prehistoric animal or a gigantic crustacean, the Recinto Ferial has already become a landmark in the city since its inauguration in 1995.
