Hotel de la Marina

This was one of the most sought-after hotels for its quality and price in Santa Cruz in the second half of the 19th century. 

Located in the Villalba house, a building that existed where the Casino now stands, the hotel had its main entrance on La Marina street. It was inaugurated on the first of June 1862, featuring 30 rooms, bathrooms, dining room, lounge with views over the sea (pier) and the mountain (at the rear); it also offered stables and a garage. 

In 1866, full board at this place, also known as Fonda Española , cost 4 pesetas, although a more economical agreement could be reached if bargained. For that price, two meals were served daily, at 10 in the morning and 6 in the evening: the menu consisted of eggs, fish, meat (all with abundant amounts of oil), fruit, wine and coffee. 

From February 1889 it was renamed Hotel Internacional, raising its level of comfort and cleanliness. Its location, very close to the port, made it a place quite frequented by guests who stopped over in Santa Cruz on their transatlantic journeys.

The building was demolished in 1929 to build the current Casino de Tenerife, whose facilities were inaugurated in 1935.
