The writer Jesús Rodríguez Castellano (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 1953) in his novel Cobwebs offers us a daring and labyrinthine magical vision of a geography with random landscapes: the real and the unreal world. This created magic presents aspects of the city of Santa Cruz from its singular perspective.
«[...] The pier, the port, with the sweetened sea lamp that had died, was like the curved tube of a mulatto before the invention of the camera. Yes, the boldest from the Timbales school used to go down to that pier. And now, to that feathered serpent of local bustle they had put harnesses, more piers around the old one had disfigured that splendid area of Varuna.
The Varunenses do not complain. They are used to seeing how the city is disfigured, condemned. They were taking it to an excremental gallows. There was a time, God lives, when the diagonal Rambla was Pure Dust and the horse-drawn carts, toc, toc... Then they put the black asphalt that sickens the beautiful laurels. Then an architects’ school mercilessly sweeps away the modernist houses.
The city is disfigured. It is useless to describe it.»
