Guanarteme Cinema

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Memory · Subcategory: Memory spaces · Year: 1960 · Authors: José Luis Jiménez Domínguez

In June 1960 the Guanarteme Cinema was inaugurated, becoming the last of the three cinemas installed in the area. The building was initially owned by Francisco Reyes Ortega. The arrangements for the construction of the cinema began in 1947, when the building plans were submitted to the City Council according to the designs of the architect José Luis Jiménez Domínguez for a total capacity of 916 spectators. However, the works were greatly delayed, so the cinema did not open its doors until June 1960 with a Philips T.P.5 projection system.

In 1977 the cinema was acquired by Julio Cabrera Guerra and remained in operation until July 1986, when, after more than 20 years active, it closed.
