The Hermitage of San Antonio Abad

The present day hermitage of San Antonio Abad, next to the square of the same name, is the rebuilt version of the 18th century with its exact construction date showing proudly on its façade: 1757. It occupies the site of the chapel of the original military camp set up around the start of the conquest of the island (1478). Tradition has it that Christopher Columbus even said his prayers there. It is a late Mudejar style structure, and rectagular in shape, with a single nave and presbytery. The eight-sided coffered ceiling characterizes its stylistic appointment. The façade has large pillasters, and a lintled doorway within an alfiz frame and corbels; above it is a window with a ledge, curved arch, with both panels worked out of the same stone cast. The building is topped by a straight gable end and a Baroque bell tower.
