Hermitage of San Roque

[...] the old hermitage was constructed over the first few decades of the 16th century, although it was completely rebuilt around 1780. It was dedicated to the Patron Saint celebrated every year on 16th August, and despite so many centuries of service to the spiritual concerns of its neighbours, it was not consecrated as a parish until 1939, by bishop Antonio Pildain Zapiain.

This whole area, with its hermitage, farmland, water channels and mills, and the footrpint left by the rooms of its first inhabitants, can be clearly marked out in old plans, such as the one belonging to military engineer Antonio Riviere, dated 1742, or the one by Joseph Ruiz Zermeño from 1773, along with many others later on which reflect the gradual expansion of the neighbourhood, which, despite its urban character, still preserves the remains of its agricultural features, along the ravine banks of the Guiniguada, and is something that Las Palmas de Gran Canaria should be able to value and keep alive, as they constitute a truly natural monument, and a substantial part of its historical and landscape heritage.
