The Alonso Quesada Garden (Parque Romano)

A tribute was made to  Alonso Quesada, the pseudonym of Rafael Romero Quesada (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 1888-1925), and poet, who wrote verses about the city and the night, by installing a monument that would leave a legacy for future generations of Grancanarians. For this, they successfully chose a garden spot close by the sea, undoubtedly to the joy of the bard himself, opposite the gardens at Doramas Park and nearby Ciudad Jardín, the British style neighbourhood of stately homes. Once again, next to his bust made by Telde sculptor Plácido Fleitas, are the verses taken from "Tierras de Gran Canaria", with the words «¡The sun shining brighty on the crags and the sea ... as if it were inviting in the impossible!». Now the sea, on its horizon, has been moved back with the construction of the modern wide coastal main road, and the Metropole Swimming Club and sports centre, plus the gardens which have been recently exquisitely refurbished. Yet Alonso Quesada, whose name is given to this whole area, and where the bustling nightlife carries on long into the early hours, remains a permanent fixture, and while others come and go, he is the firm rock standing on his sturdy pedestal, overlooking the sea, on the city's edge, hailing in a new tomorrow, and more!
