Metropole Swimming Club
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Leisure · Subcategory: Sports
The club came about thanks to a group of enthusiasts under the leadership of Gustavo Julio Navarro Jaimez. As a student in Madrid he learnt competitive swimming under one of the great Spanish trainers Enrique Granados. As well as Julio Navarro, the project was jointly pioneered by his brother Sebastián, José Feo, Manuel Bonnet, Fernando Navarro Valle, Guillermo Wyttembach, Enrique Martínez and a number of others, all of whom organised crossings over Las Canteras beach in the 1930s.
Once the Civil War was over, the Club was set up for swimmers at the then 20-metre pool in the Hotel Metropole, probably making it the first swimming pool on the island. This was kindly handed over to the club, hence its Metropole name.
