New Bridge
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Memory · Subcategory: Memory spaces · Year: 1533
This was the second bridge built in the city to cross the course of the Guiniguada ravine and thus directly connect the urban centres of Vegueta and Triana. Its construction was ordered through a royal decree granted in 1533.
The location was established upstream from the other existing crossing since the second decade of the 16th century, the so-called “Old Bridge”. The new structure was made of wood and came to link almost directly the cathedral located in Vegueta with the Franciscan buildings (church and convent) located in Triana.
With the establishment of this new bridge, Las Palmas had, in its first century of existence, two footbridges over the Guiniguada that clearly facilitated the connection between the main urban centres of the city.
The New Bridge was soon ruined by periodic floods. Over the years it was rebuilt, always with materials more resistant than those used in the construction of the previous structure. Its most enduring successor was the Stone or Verdugo Bridge, whose definitive disappearance occurred due to the closure of the ravine’s course, already in the 20th century.
