Modernist Route: 05. Music bandstand
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Routes · Subcategory: Modernist route · Year: 1927 · Authors: Rafael Massanet y Faus
The same architect [Rafael Massanet y Faus] and same owner [Pablo Castellano Felipe] built a bandstand for lease in San Telmo park, in 1927. This was the second one to be built in the city, following the one made at Alameda de Colón.
This kiosk is set on eight equal sides, and is built high enough for a cafetería on the ground floor, similar to many other musical bandstands. Perhaps the greatest feature of this project is the carefree design Masanet made to the roof, with traditionally shaped gables, and finished off with circular corbels on an open arcade over the stand’s base, giving the kiosk an appearance which is quite difficult to classify in architectural terms.
