Verano de Juan el Chino, by Claudio de la Torre (1895-1973) is the narration of a dramatic summer in 1851, and set alight the deadly fire of an epidemic on an island in the Atlantic.

«María Isabel took her first steps outside, while still in her convalescence. The Moroccan Ibrahinm advised taking in the sea breeze to strengthen her body. Juan took her along to the beach of La Colegiata, at the bottom of the street, where the old district of the city ended. It was a stony, open beach, where the waves came crashing in at high tide. At low tide, when the waters held back, the pebbles, rounded by the wind and the waves, burned like embers under the sun. A long, stretched out coastline could be made out in the distance, that blended into the sands at the south.

The old monastery had been in ruins for many years, but some of the walls still stood firm, in whose shadow sat María Isabel and Juan.»
