El Frontón
Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Memory · Subcategory: Sites of memory · Year: 1943
El Frontón was located in one of the large backyards of what had been the Victoria Asylum, a facility that after the Civil War became an educational centre run by the Salesian Schools.
Since 1943, the year of El Frontón's inauguration, Basque pelota, fronton, basketball and other varied sports were practised and competed here, as well as cockfights and other attractions. It was also a meeting place for the residents of the Duggi neighbourhood and a venue for lively dances on the occasion of various local festivals.
El Frontón disappeared in 1963 when the City Council, owner of the property, ceded it to the Salesian Brothers so that this religious community could expand its educational and vocational training facilities.
