Sculpture of Dácil Vilar Borges

This sculpture is a tribute to Dácil Vilar Borges (1925-1990), founder of the Asociación de Cooperación Juvenil San Miguel (San Miguel Youth Cooperation Association), and is the work of the artist Juan Carlos Albadalejo. It is located in Primero de Mayo square, between José Hernández Afonso street and San Sebastián Avenue. 

Dácil Vilar Borges was one of the greatest promoters of social action in Tenerife. Supported by non-profit non-governmental organisations, she founded in 1967 the Provincial Association of Housewives, with the aim of mediating with the administrations for the improvement of the neighbourhoods of Santa Cruz. In 1975 she founded the Asociación de Cooperación Juvenil San Miguel to promote weekend foster care in private homes for young people who were institutionalised and came from broken families. In 1977 San Miguel Adicciones (San Miguel Addictions) was created to cover a need until then unmet by public institutions: the prevention, assistance and social reintegration of drug addicts. It was a pioneering initiative in the Canary Islands and her work was recognised with the Reina Sofía award in 1991 for "Best Social Work". 

The sculpture of Dácil Vilar Borges by Juan Carlos Albadalejo was made in stone and shows the protagonist seated in a thoughtful attitude.
