Spiral

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Art · Subcategory: Sculpture · Year: 1999 · Authors: Martín Chirino

A very special cycle within Martn Chirino's sculptural production is the one generically titled Alfaguara . Originating in 1997, this cycle developed as another twist on his already classic theme of spiral figures. The fifth sculpture in this series is the well-known one simply called Spiral .

Created in 1999, it stands proudly outside the Parliament of the Canary Islands, whose serenely neoclassical modest-sized building it dialogues with, as it also does with the modern architecture of the new sector of the Parliament itself.

The sculpture is a monumental twelve-metre-high work, a torrential baroque overflow of iron that seems to have spread freely through space and grown almost vegetatively like a gigantic verode, that shrubby plant that sometimes grows between the tiles of typical Canarian buildings.
