Jacaranda on the Rambla

This specimen of jacaranda tree ( Jacaranda mimosifolia , D. Don.) located on the stretch of the Rambla at its intersection with Robayna Street, reaches a total height of 14 metres and a trunk perimeter with rough bark of 2.10 metres.

Jacarandas are trees, also called rosewoods, belonging to the Bignoniaceae family. They are native to South America, mainly Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina. Their proliferation has spread to other parts of the world due to their ornamental beauty.

Santa Cruz has a large number of trees of this species, characterised by having bipinnate leaves that fall in spring, giving way then to a spectacular flowering of tiny bell-shaped flowers of lilac colour, in a light violet tone with soft pinkish hues, which completely cover the tree's crown. These flowers attract a large number of pollinators, such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, and dye the city during the months of May and June with a very particular shade.

The jacaranda on the Rambla, located opposite the Hispano-Inglés school, is a notable and representative tree of this species that brings so much brightness to the city.
