Tamarind Tree in García Sanabria Park

This impressive tamarind tree ( Tamarindus indica ) is located on one side of García Sanabria Park, specifically halfway along the perimeter path that runs parallel to Numancia Street.

It is a tree from the Caesalpiniaceae family, originally from tropical Africa and Asia. It is evergreen and can reach up to 25 m in height. Its trunk has greyish bark, fissured and characteristically scaly and corky. Its crown is formed by long, horizontal branches with pinnate compound leaves of pale green colour with red veins. The fruit of this tree is brown with an edible pulp that has a slightly acidic flavour. By adding water and sugar, a wonderful refreshing drink is made from this fruit.
