Til of Monte de Aguirre
Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Leisure · Subcategory: Singular trees
The til or linden ( Ocotea foetens ) is one of the Tertiary relict trees that still survive in the Canary Islands. It has been identified with the mythical El Hierro tree "Garoé", which distilled water by condensing the moisture of the trade winds on its branches, as this species grows in optimal zones for such a phenomenon to occur.
This is the case of this specimen located in Monte de Aguirre, at about 760 metres above sea level, facing the trade wind, very close to a water gallery known as El Río, in the heart of Anaga Rural Park. Its dense and globose crown reaches a height of just over 20 metres, also having an extraordinary perimeter due to its lateral branches and some of its spectacular suckers.
Other specimens with similar characteristics are found around this til.
