Monument to José de Zárate y Penichet

On the street bearing his name, parallel to the Tahodio ravine and just a few metres from Avenida de Anaga, the Tenerife Bar Association dedicated this monument in 1988 to its founder and first dean.

José de Zárate y Penichet Magüer y Cárdenas (1762-1840) studied law in Seville and in 1796 moved to Tenerife, where he witnessed firsthand Nelson's attack on the city in 1797. The following year he became mayor of Santa Cruz. A man of excellent legal training, he had an intense professional life, founding the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Bar Association in 1838.

The sculpture that honours him is a concrete monolith with red marble from Alicante. On one of its faces there is a bas-relief outlining the silhouette of the lawyer and on the opposite side, the Battle of Nelson is depicted. At its base appear three coats of arms: the family, that of the Bar Association and that of the city council. The entire ensemble was the work of the Madrid sculptor and professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of La Laguna, Juan Carlos Albaladejo.
