Monument to Santiago García Sanabria

In 1935 architect Marrero Regalado was commissioned to create two monuments in memory of Mayor García Sanabria: one funerary, to be placed at the entrance to the Santa Lastenia cemetery; another commemorative, to be installed at the central point of the municipal park that bears the name of the remembered mayor and of which he was the greatest promoter.

The park monument stands as a monolith over a Baroque-shaped fountain, with a series of joined prisms made of beautiful natural stone, the middle one being wider and taller.

As a complement, sculptor Francisco Borges Salas incorporated, in addition to a figure representing motherhood, a bust of the honoured mayor and on the faces of the monolith, reliefs with robust male figures. One presents in the palm of his raised hand a six-pointed star, the other holds a stevia. Both elements symbolise Work and the Future, values that guided the administration of the remembered mayor. Around this entire sculptural group, in 1972 a luminous fountain with various water jets was installed. 

The whole ensemble acquires an expressionist and forceful aspect. The monument was completed in 1942.
