Monument to Admiral Antequera

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Art · Subcategory: Sculpture · Year: 1977

Located in a landscaped area at the junction of Avenida de Anaga and La Rambla, there is this bronze bust representing Juan Bautista Antequera y Bobadilla (1823-1890), admiral of the Spanish navy, native of La Laguna, hero of the Pacific campaigns, Minister of the Navy, senator for the Canary Islands and the first to circumnavigate the world in an armoured ship commanding the frigate  Numancia .

The newspaper El Día was the driving force behind the tribute to this military figure, placing his effigy at the entrance to the dock in 1977; however, on the centenary of his death in 1990, and coinciding with the remodelling of the port entrance, the statue was moved to the place it occupies today.
