The Provincial Historical Archive of Las Palmas Joaquín Blanco

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Cultural spaces · Subcategory: Libraries and archives · Year: 1948

This archive, with the initials AHPLP in Spanish, was created on 20th September 1948 with the aim of guarding notary protocol covering over one hundred years, historical documentation pertaining to the Courts and Magistrates, the Inland Revenue delegations and other official paperwork from the province.

In 1984 refurbishments started on the building known as the Casa de Viera y Clavijo, in order to adapt it to its new use, this being the Provincial Historical Archive of Las Palmas. In 1987 a splendid completely restored building was inaugurated, maintaining its Neoclassical 18th century façades, standing on three floors.

In 1989 the Canary Government decided to give the AHPLP the official name of «Archivo Histórico Provincial de Las Palmas Joaquín Blanco», in a tribute to the memory of the illustrious Canarian researcher, don Joaquín Blanco Montesdeoca, the director of the AHPLP for 20 years.
