San Antonio Battery

This battery was located at the edge of the sea between the fortresses of Santa Catalina and Santa Ana. It was erected with the purpose of covering the long coastal line between both castles.

Its construction must have taken place around 1797, as that year an inventory was drawn up referring to its recent establishment, which had already been proposed by the military engineer Miguel Hermosilla in the previous decade.

The San Antonio battery was a small construction, consisting of a simple trapezoidal parapet with an open gorge. Next to one side of its wall was a building that functioned as guardhouse, ammunition store and kitchen.

We know that by the mid-20th century a two-storey private house stood on the site where the old battery had been; the old parapet served as a retaining wall for the street itself, then called 18 de Julio , now Luis Doreste Silva.
