El Frontón Building
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Architecture · Subcategory: Civil architecture · Year: 1944 · Authors: José Enrique Marrero Regalado
It is a unique building in the architecture of the city and the neighbourhood. It was intended to requalify the area around San Telmo park. It was a multifunctional and recreational building with uses including a restaurant, nightclub and offices, all dependent on a main sporting use. The façade is regionalist and neo-Baroque in the manner of this architect [Marrero Regalado] and stands out as a landmark with the turret and the large continuous balcony. These elements qualify the street front.
After the pelota game phase, the hall was a boxing ring and for other sports. Later it became a warehouse and it was then that part of the original grandstand disappeared.
