The Woermann Building
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Architecture · Subcategory: Civil architecture · Year: 2000 · Authors: Ábalos & Herreros
Ábalos & Herreros are the creators of another fine work which received the special award of Mención Oraá XII, 2004-2005 and has become a new icon in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: the whole ensemble of private and business premises in the Plaza Woermann (2001-2005). This work was carried out in collaboration with the local team of Joaquín Casariego and Elsa Guerra. The jury pointed out that the project assumed its role as an urban landmark on the city's skyline, as well as the limitation of its compositive resources. The two-piece structure that flanks the public square has undoubtedly more than met its proposed function of establishing a unique and representative building. The residential tower and office building, both made with glass, have become an architectural emblem for the city.
[...] The square is an urban expression of a highly artistic nature: the design by artist Albert Oehlen creates an attractive and accessible public space. The coloured glass-covered tower with plant motifs has become a natural watchtower for local inhabitants, a proud symbol that stands tall over the city.
