The Cambullonero

The cambullonero is, according to the Basic Dictionary of Canarianisms , the person who engages in cambullón, that is, the trafficking of goods through smuggling and illegal trade. An idiosyncratic figure of the economic activities of the Canarian port areas, which the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has wished to honour with this sculpture installed in June 2006 in the park of Castillo de la Luz.

The sculpture, five metres high, is the work of Luis Montull (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1934), an artist well known for his Monument to Canarian Activities which presides over Plaza de España in the capital. As in that work, Montull uses masterfully carved stone, resulting in a piece of very pure lines. The cambullonero looks towards infinity with his sack on his back, in an almost idealised image of those people who had to resort to clandestine practices in times of scarcity and countless difficulties.
