Garita de la Laja

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Memory · Subcategory: Memory spaces · Year: 1656?

This military installation located south of the San Pedro tower was known as the "Garita de la Alaja" or Garita de la Laja. It was possibly a modest construction serving the function of surveillance and observation of dangers that might approach the city from the southern sector.

The date of its establishment is unknown, but we have reports that it was fully operational and in need of fortification by the mid-17th century. It may have been erected in 1656, when the rebuilding of the southern wall was undertaken under the direction of military engineer Lope de Mendoza.
