Refrigeration Plant (Ice Factory)
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Architecture · Subcategory: Industrial architecture
The Ice Factory, known in port circles as Fharpes , is the last of these industrial facilities still standing in the city after the Port Authority demolished the one belonging to the Ojeda company within the port area. The old factory was opened by the company Lloret y Llinares in the early 1950s and was active until 1982, when it ceased ice production and was converted into storage and offices.
It is a large double-nave building distinguished by the four-storey front section. This consists of a fully glazed piece with narrow vertical mullions where a large framed access opening is located, and another party wall office section with horizontal openings between mouldings, topped by a glazed staircase box on the corner, which connects to a solid recessed block of the same height as the first.
