As evening falls, powerful jets of water burst out in all colours and shapes, wavy, criss-cross and zigzagging, from the Fuente Luminosa. It is surrounded by a swathe of perennial palm trees, standing tall and slim like yeomen on guard in plant form, and in the background the beautiful old building at the Zona Marítima de Canarias. The Plaza del Fuero Real de Gran Canaria, in accordance with the official nomenclature given to the city, represents the spirit of the future together with the traditions and history covering the last five centuries, the Plaza de la Fuente Luminosa is the voice of popular sentiment on the part of the locals, symbolised in this way by its enormous fountain, inaugurated in 1973.
