Central Market of Las Palmas

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Architecture · Subcategory: Squares, streets & markets · Year: 1958 · Authors: Antonio Cardona Aragón, Joan Margarit Serradell

A two-storey building with a basement occupying the entire block, designed as a nave with two side pavilions. It stands out formally for the structure of inverted trapezoidal supports that project from the facade panels. The axis of symmetry is the entrance, under a curved canopy, leading to a free and functional floor plan. Folded canopies provide the formal note at the side entrances. The market layout was designed by Antonio Cardona (1954), although the volume and elevations are by Juan Margarit (1956).

The Central Market was built in 1958 with the aim of becoming one of the main food distribution centres in the municipality of Las Palmas. Its name, "Central", refers to its central role in food distribution in the municipality, since from its creation until 1981 it served the dual function of retail and wholesale market for Las Palmas, supplying fresh products to other shops and markets in the municipality. Noteworthy are the murals by the artist Pepe Dámaso, whose originals made with enamels date from 1958. This work, lost, was recreated in 2024 thanks to the collaboration between the artist and the Ayuntamiento de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
