This is possibly the finest example of "iron" architecture in Gran Canaria. Its history goes back to the year 1891, when Catalonian architect Laureano Arroyo y Velasco conceived it as a supply centre, to be made out of iron, similar to today's structure, applying for the blueprints from abroad. They envisaged the use of bricks, wood, curved zinc covering and iron as their basic materials. The idea, however, did not prosper until 1908 when it became part of another project to build the market together with a school and several municipal buildings, but in the end only the market was constructed. Its most striking feature, apart from the use of iron as a new building material, was the idea of putting shops all around the outer edge of the building.
