The Gaze
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Art · Subcategory: Sculpture · Year: 2008 · Authors: Sergio Gil
The sculptor himself, Sergio Gil, explains his work in an interview with the newspaper La Provincia: "It is 26 metres tall and in it I have managed to combine the environmental factors of the surroundings with the symbolism of my creation. It is not a sculpture symbolising the empty gaze, but the gaze that sees a world full of hope and peace that invites us to look in solidarity at all people, wherever they come from, equally. But it is not the gaze that watches and monitors us. It is the understanding and tolerant gaze that ennobles the humblest beings of nature. The Gaze has 93,000 kilos of corten steel structure brought from Barcelona and at the same time is supported on more than 300,000 kilos of reinforced concrete at the base. This material, which is of German origin, will prevent the sculpture from deteriorating as it is located in a windy area with high levels of corrosion by the sea".
