As a minister, member of parliament and embassador, Fernando León y Castillo (Telde, 1842 - Biarritz, 1918) is considered to be the most influential Canary politician towards the end of the 19th century. He was an avid reader, and looked to cultivate science and art that would allow him to enrich and develop his spirit. He worked in journalism in his first years as a university student and Law professional. It was in the Revista España and other Madrid and Canary publications where he wrote hundreds of articles and editorials. His parliamentary speeches were published under the title of Discursos Parlamentarios del Excmo. Sr. D. Fernando de León y Castillo and through the Real Academia de Ciencias Políticas y Morales he published his speeches on the Constitutional Monarchy. In the last years of his life he wrote his memories under the title of Mis Tiempos.
