Monument to the Olympic Games

This sculpture was inaugurated in July 1992, coinciding with the carrying of the Olympic torch through Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The linking of the islands, through their sportsmen and women, with the Barcelona Olympics, was reflected in this fine piece of sculpture with its accentuated symbolic character. It is made out of stainless steel, and measures eight metres in height and rises up over a platform about half a metre wide, itself divided into seven symmetrical sides alluding to the number of the islands in the Canaries. Sitting vertically atop the piece is the Olympic cauldren in the shape of the letter C, a symbolic shape referring to the first letter of Canaries. Inside this letter there are five cylinders representing the Olympic rings.
