Drama writers and narrators Luis (1861-1925) and Agustín (1863-1935) Millares Cubas were born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. They were the sons of historian, musician and literary writer Agustín Millares Torres and Encarnación Cubas y Báez. The Millares Cubas brothers lived in a time of literary confluences towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. They represented a clear example in the Canaries of efforts to get behind art and literature. The cultural activities which were carried out at their home made them unrivalled leaders of literary movements and staunch defenders of culture in Gran Canaria around the beginning of the 20th century. Within the islands' scene they stood out as leading representatives of costumbrist and regional theatre. But we shouldn't forget the many trends of their literature, or ignore the fact they were always interested in other leading modern authors of their time. However, with the Canary scene it was their custombrist works that mainly stood out, where the feeling of a concrete reality and longing to display it in their works was very prominent, reflecting in this way the linguistic style of the Canaries in their characters.
