Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920) is one of the most universal and outstanding Canary novelists from the 19th century. He analyzed the Spain that he lived in, compiling over 30 titles, among which his standout works included Doña Perfecta, La desheredada, Fortunata y Jacinta, Misericordia as well as the four novels of Torquemada. His historical concern is captured in his collection of socio-political sufferings of the 19th century, in his five series of Episodios Nacionales, put together in 46 novels which combine history and fiction. His bibliography is completed with over twenty theatre works that were taken to the stage, as well as nearly a hundred journalistic articles on a variety of topics, plus travel books, memories, etc.
