Teodoro Golfín is an important character in the novel Marianela by Benito Pérez Galdós, published in 1878. He is a middle-aged man, kind and of upright principles, the doctor who gives Pablo the gift of sight and tries to save Nela.

“He was a man with coarse features, dark-skinned, with a face as intelligent as it was sensual, thick lips, black and bristly hair, sparkling gaze, tireless nature, strong constitution, although somewhat worn by the American climate. His large, round face, bony forehead, rebellious though short mane, the fire in his eyes, his thick hands, had led people to say of him: he is a black lion. Indeed, he looked like a lion, and like the king of animals, he never ceased to show at every moment the esteem he had for himself. But the vanity of that distinguished man was the most excusable of all vanities, for it consisted in highlighting two titles of glory, namely: his passion for surgery and the humility of his origin. He generally spoke incorrectly, being incapable of constructing sentences with grace and elegance. His phrases were rapid and broken according to the emission of his thought, which was a kind of electric emission.”
