Tomás de Iriarte (Puerto de la Cruz, 1750 - Madrid, 1791) is one of Spain's leading figures from the second half of the 18th century. It is strange how little is still known about him and his works in general. It is also paradoxical that, although he raised the cultural level of society of that time, he should only be known today for his Fábulas literarias. It is certainly true that these are perhaps the most remarkable of his literary production, but Iriarte made great efforts to bring fresh ideas to other many areas of literary expression. From journalism, theatre and poetic theory through to public speaking and musical arts.

As for his social role, he was undoubtedly the prototype of an enlightened man, with great cultural interests covering a number of facets. Perhaps his most outstanding quality was his concern for improving each and every one of the literarary genres he worked in or had at least some kind of activity in.
