House at 23 Candelaria Street
Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Architecture · Subcategory: Civil architecture · Year: Siglo XVIII
This splendid house, whose first owners are unknown to us, is one of the best examples of 18th-century domestic architecture preserved in the city.
On its elongated façade we can observe the symmetry of its openings across three floors, topped by a flat parapet. The corner is chamfered to prevent wear that could be caused by carts circulating on the streets at that time rubbing against the angles.
Inside, the narrow entrance hall led to a small and very tall courtyard, with a single column featuring a Baroque capital. The staircase, upon reaching the mezzanine, presents three arches. On the third floor, there was a closed gallery with sash windows. The door of the main lounge has a carved Baroque frame.
The house has a side façade on Clavel Street, where a beautiful balcony on the fourth floor stands out, an antechamber to what was once a granary.
Its original owner must have been a wealthy member of Santa Cruz society, possibly a prosperous merchant. The building was in a state of evident neglect for many years. Today, with numerous alterations to its original composition, it is occupied by a Chinese food restaurant business.
